Achieving our Mission in 2023

Empowering children and young people to thrive, reach their full learning potential and positively contribute to society, remains our mission. Walking the golden talk, Ulalo has worked tirelessly to achieve its goals.

Malokotela CDSS The Beacon of Hope

With Children and Young people at the centre of our heart. The opening of Malokotela Community Day secondary School in September brought joy not only to the community but also to our team.

50 Students were selected to commence their secondary school education at Malokotela saving them a walking distance of 22 kilometres that they had to walk to reach the nearest school, Enukweni CDSS.

The new school has 5 teacher’s houses, 3 classroom blocks, 1 administration block and a dining room.

Science laboratory and hostels for girls and boys are in progress.

The Development came to life with efforts of Ulalo, in partnership with Chancen durch Bildung, and generous funding from BMZ Engagement Global.

The Way to School-20KM On Foot

They used to walk 10 kilometers plus to get to school

Almost in all the villages that we are working, their nearest secondary schools are about 12 kilometres away from reach, in some cases  even more, making the journey to attain education be a tough one,  some students even give up on school due to unbearable walking distances.

Aligning with our mission, Ulalo with its partners launched a bike rental project that has seen 158 bikes being distributed in secondary schools; Enukweni, Ekwendeni, Jombo, Ezondweni, Choma, Engucwini and Luzi.

Finding Voice Through Bike Rental Project

Annabel Chavula

Annabel Chavula’s journey to Jombo Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) is a hard nut to crack.  Each and every day and every step she takes turns to a chance for her to swim in a dilemma of giving up on Education.

The 16-year-old girl from Kawanda Village in Mzimba used to trek 20 kilometres to and from her village to attain her basic human right to Education at Jombo

“The journey was tiresome, I used to miss the first lessons that affected my grades. Most the times when walking to and from school, I used to contemplate on giving up on education,” Annabel narrates.

Annabel adds: “When walking to school, men of all ages always approach me, I have had friends who have given in their wishes, they dropped out, it was never easy to complete secondary school education with this unbearable distance.”

Unlocking New Horizons with Computer Labs

Bwengu Computer Lab

With the aim of bridging the digital divide and empowering education, Ulalo with support from its partners Acronis, Droidcon and our charity partner Groundbreaker renovated a classroom block to a significant Computer lab.

About 400 students are benefiting from the computer lab and have already started yielding fruits of the lab.

“We do not have enough equipment in our science laboratory, and the computer lab is coming to our rescue we always go and watch experiments, that alone has improved our performance in School” said Aidah Pwere Form 4 At Bwengu.

Meanwhile, Ulalo with its partners has completed the construction of a computer laboratory at Enukweni CDSS Pending for its launch in January 2024.

Golden Touch Through Schools Means Program

We are proud to see how our School Meals Program continues to help thousands of children in our target 43 schools.

During these lean months when food is scarce, the SMP is providing consistent meals to students and ensuring their attendance in school.

To ensure that the program is sustainable Ulalo trained its target schools in Manure making.

We are committed to supporting the education and well-being of children and young people in Malawi.
